What can we do?
Historically, only one action has ever worked: a national collective Rent Strike (which started in Glasgow in 1915 and quickly spread). This led to the 1919 Housing Act for fair rent social housing, rent controls, and public rent assessors. 1910 = 10% of owners rented to the 90% in the Private Rental Sector (PRS). By 1989 = 63% Owner Occupier, 28% Social Housing and less than 9% to the PRS.
‘Now 21% to the PRS (and growing), 60% O/O, and 19% S/H, with more ‘built to rent’ by investment Hedge Funds (rentiers) like Black Stone.’
The present ‘divide and rule’ (cult of individualism, i.e., I’m alright, Jack) has worked since 1979, preying on our selfishness and fear of loss to those deemed less entitled by the press. The issue now is not just the old working class but the more vocal and powerful middle classes and their children; the money in the bank of Mum and Dad can only last so long.
The resentment of never cutting the parental apron strings as a conflict of ‘individualism’ versus financial support will fester until a family crisis bursts the puss-ridden spot.
‘None of this applies to the Nordic region.‘
